| ROLE |
With its total revenue expected to rise
to over US$60 billion by 2010, the semiconductor industry in Taiwan
has demonstrated an astonishing growth and become one of the major
IC producers in the world. The Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association
(TSIA) was founded in November 1996 to meet the growing demand on
industrial activities and to promote the cooperation and the development
of Taiwan's local semiconductor industry. Bearing in mind that notable
performances in the past does not guarantee long-lasting profit in
an ever-advancing industry like semiconductor, the TSIA aims to help
the semiconductor industry in Taiwan remain on a competitive edge
through various domestic and international activities.
As of July 2001, TSIA owns over 140 corporate and associate members,
including companies engaged in semiconductor R&D, design, manufacturing,
packaging, testing, equipment and materials. TSIA regularly organizes
and sponsors a variety of domestic seminars and international symposia
to strengthen business linkage and broaden business scope for its
member companies. TSIA also endeavors to build up interactive relationship
between the local industry and corresponding international organizations.
The effort in joining the World Semiconductor Council (WSC) and the
International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) has demonstrated
TSIA's role to foster the globalization and benefits of Taiwan's semiconductor
industry. |
| MISSION |
 |
To promote cooperation among different sectors
in the local semiconductor industry |
 |
To participate in global standard setting and
activities related to the development of the semiconductor industry |
 |
To engage in international negotiations on behalf
of the local industry |
 |
To provide consultation and services for its
member companies |
 |
To create better communications among its member
companies and with other industry associations |
 |
To provide suggestions to the government on
industrial policies |
|
| MAJOR ACTIVITIES |
 |
Participating
in international activities |
| |
TSIA is actively engaged in international activities
such as the World Semiconductor Council (WSC) and the International
Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS). TSIA also joined
the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) and the Semiconductor
International Capacity Statistics (SICAS) as an associate member
to provide the latest statistics of the global semiconductor
market to its member companies. |
 |
Organizing conferences |
| |
TSIA regularly organizes seminars in the areas
of Technology, Information, ESH (Environment, Safety, and Health),
and Finance. Other conferences such as Semiconductor Manufacturing
Technology Workshop and VLSI-TSA Symposium also attract abundant
attendance from the industry. |
 |
International negotiation |
| |
TSIA is devoted to international negotiations
of interest to the semiconductor industry in Taiwan. The law
suits in DRAM and SRAM anti-dumping cases from 1998 through
2000 are significant examples demonstrating the function TSIA
serves for the local semiconductor industry. |
 |
Local
cooperation |
| |
TSIA works closely with associations representing
different sectors of the local community, for example, the Taiwan
TFT-LCD Association (TTLA), to better ensure extensive contacts
among the semiconductor industry and other industries. The collaboration
with SEMI Taiwan also provides the local manufacturing sector
with better connection with the equipment and material sectors
of the world. Typical cooperative activities with SEMI Taiwan
include Industry Strategy Symposium (ISS) Taiwan and SEMICON
Taiwan. |
